The Face was an operative of Imperial Japan active during World War II, ruling over a fortress in the so-called Valley of Death. His skull-like visage was reportedly the result of exposure to his own deadly gas—an invention that disfigured and killed its victims in the same manner as Marvel’s Red Skull’s dust of death. By fall 1944, the Face and his followers prepared to unleash waves of this gas on Japan’s enemies. When the Destroyer encountered a soldier who survived the Face’s attack, he infiltrated the villain’s fortress, learned of plans to bomb America with the gas, and witnessed the Face’s demise during a climactic battle. The Face was killed, the gas threat was ended, and the remaining soldiers routed.
