Birdmen of Pa-Pi-Ru-Gua (Earth-616)

The Birdmen of Pa-Pi-Ru-Gua were a remote tribe of humans living on an island near New Guinea during World War II. Dwelling inside a dormant volcano, they commanded enormous birds capable of flight and attack, using them for defense and ritual combat. The tribe’s existence remained hidden until the Imperial Japanese military discovered them and persuaded them to ally with Japan — establishing a base inside the volcano to gain an aerial advantage in the Pacific theater.

When Allied intelligence learned of their involvement, Captain America and Bucky were dispatched to investigate. Shot down upon arrival, they were captured and forced to endure the Birdmen’s sacred “Three Trials of Ru-Gu-Ri-Bi,” a brutal test of strength, endurance, and will. As Captain America fought his way through the trials, Bucky and captured soldiers escaped their prison, commandeered a Japanese bomber, and bombed the volcano — triggering an eruption that destroyed the base and the Birdmen’s civilization. Whether any of them survived remains unknown.
