As the group encounters the island's native Iwi people and a stranded World War II pilot named Hank Marlow (John C. Reilly), they begin to understand that Kong is not merely a monster — he is the island's guardian, protecting it from the Skullcrawlers that lurk beneath the surface.

Packard, consumed by vengeance after losing men in the attack, becomes obsessed with destroying Kong, putting him at odds with the rest of the group. Conrad and Weaver, having come to understand Kong's true nature, race to prevent Packard from awakening the largest Skullcrawler and triggering a catastrophe.
