Pictures. It is a reboot of the King Kong franchise and the second installment in Legendary's MonsterVerse, a shared cinematic universe. The film stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Jing Tian, and John C. Reilly. ==Plot== Set in 1973, the film follows a diverse team of scientists, soldiers, and adventurers who are brought together to explore an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean. The expedition is organized by Bill Randa (John Goodman), a government official from the secret organization Monarch, who recruits tracker James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston) and photojournalist Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) to join the team. They are escorted by a military unit led by Lieutenant Colonel Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson). Upon arriving at Skull Island, the group is immediately attacked by Kong, a massive ape of colossal proportions, who destroys their helicopter fleet. Separated and scattered across the island, the survivors must make their way to an extraction point while contending with the island's many dangerous creatures, known as Skullcrawlers. As the group encounters the island's native Iwi people and a stranded World War II pilot named Hank Marlow (John C. Reilly), they begin to understand that Kong is not merely a monster — he is the island's guardian, protecting it from the Skullcrawlers that lurk beneath the surface. Packard, consumed by vengeance after losing men in the attack, becomes obsessed with destroying Kong, putting him at odds with the rest of the group. Conrad and Weaver, having come to understand Kong's true nature, race to prevent Packard from awakening the largest Skullcrawler and triggering a catastrophe. Kong ultimately defeats the creature and the survivors are rescued, while a post-credits scene hints at the existence of other massive creatures including Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. ==Cast== * Tom Hiddleston as James Conrad, a former British Special Air Service captain and expert tracker hired as a guide. * Samuel L. Jackson as Lieutenant Colonel Preston Packard, the leader of the Sky Devils helicopter squadron. * John Goodman as Bill Randa, a senior Monarch official who organizes the expedition to Skull Island. * Brie Larson as Mason Weaver, an anti-war photojournalist who joins the expedition. * Jing Tian as San Lin, a Monarch biologist and scientist. * Toby Kebbell as Major Jack Chapman, a soldier in Packard's unit. * John C. Reilly as Hank Marlow, a World War II pilot who has been stranded on Skull Island since 1944. * Corey Hawkins as Houston Brooks, a young Monarch geologist. * Jason Mitchell as Glenn Mills, a soldier and member of the Sky Devils. * Shea Whigham as Earl Cole, a veteran soldier and Packard's loyal second-in-command. * Thomas Mann as Reg Slivko, a young soldier in Packard's unit. * John Ortiz as Victor Nieves, a representative from the government's Landsat program. * Terry Notary as Kong (motion capture and performance). ==Production== Development of the film began following the success of the 2014 Godzilla film, which launched Legendary's MonsterVerse. Jordan Vogt-Roberts, known primarily for his independent film The Kings of Summer (2013), was selected to direct. The screenplay went through several drafts involving writers Dan Gilroy, Max Borenstein, and Derek Connolly, with the story credited to John Gatins. Principal photography took place from October 2015 to April 2016, with filming locations including Hawaii, Australia, Vietnam, and Oahu. The island of Skull Island was brought to life using a combination of practical sets, location shooting in Vietnam's Ninh Binh province, and extensive visual effects. The production made notable use of Vietnam's dramatic karst landscape, particularly the scenery around Tràng An, to depict the prehistoric jungle environment of Skull Island. Henry Jackman composed the film's score, while the soundtrack features a prominent selection of classic rock music from the 1970s, reflecting the film's Vietnam War-era setting. Songs by artists including Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, Black Sabbath, and David Bowie are featured throughout. ==Release and Reception== Kong: Skull Island was released theatrically in the United States on March 10, 2017, with an earlier international rollout beginning on March 8, 2017. The film was released in both standard and IMAX formats. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its visual effects, action sequences, ensemble cast, and its embrace of the monster movie genre. Critics particularly highlighted John C. Reilly's comedic performance and the film's vibrant 1970s aesthetic. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a strong approval rating. Commercially, the film was a significant success, grossing approximately $566.7 million worldwide against a production budget of $185 million. ==Legacy and MonsterVerse Connections== Kong: Skull Island established Kong as a central figure in Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise. The film's post-credits scene directly connects to the larger universe by revealing cave paintings and documentation of other massive creatures, setting the stage for Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). The film also expanded on the lore of the Monarch organization, which had previously been introduced in the 2014 Godzilla film. Skull Island itself, along with its ecosystem of giant creatures, became a significant location in the broader MonsterVerse mythology. ==See Also== * King Kong * MonsterVerse * Godzilla (2014 film) * Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) * Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
