Godzilla vs. Mothra (ゴジラVSモスラ, Gojira tai Mosura) is a 1992 Japanese kaiju film directed by Takao Okawara and produced by Toho. It is the fourth film in the Heisei series and the highest-grossing Godzilla film in Japan at the time of its release. The film reintroduces Mothra and her dark counterpart Battra into the Heisei continuity, framing their conflict as an ancient environmental struggle predating human civilization. Thematically, the film draws on ecological concerns, contrasting Mothra's role as a benevolent protector of humanity against Battra's origins as a weapon of planetary self-defense created by the Earth itself.

Thief and adventurer Takuya Fujito is arrested after a temple robbery and is offered his freedom in exchange for joining a government expedition to Infant Island, source of a massive egg discovered offshore after a meteor impact disturbs the seabed. Accompanying him are his estranged ex-wife Masako and Kenji Andoh of the Marutomo Development Company, whose underwater construction work triggered the disturbance in the first place. On the island, they encounter the Cosmos—twin fairies who serve as Mothra's guardians—who explain that the meteor impact 12,000 years ago awakened Battra, an ancient creature created by the Earth to destroy a climate-altering device built by an advanced prehistoric civilization. Mothra was created to stop Battra when his destruction became indiscriminate, and the two have been dormant ever since. The Cosmos warn that both are now awakening again.

The Marutomo Company captures the Cosmos and smuggles them to Japan, intending to exploit them commercially. Mothra's egg hatches in the ocean and the larva makes her way toward Japan, while Battra—also in larva form—surfaces from the Earth and pursues her. Godzilla emerges from the sea and engages both larvae, and Battra is pulled into a volcanic fissure along with Godzilla. Mothra reaches Yokohama and cocoons herself on the Yokohama Landmark Tower. The Cosmos are rescued by Takuya's daughter, Midori, which prompts him to abandon his self-interest and return them. Godzilla and Battra reemerge, both now in their adult forms, and resume battle as Mothra completes her transformation. Mothra and Battra ultimately join forces against Godzilla, defeating him and dropping him into the ocean. Battra dies from the wounds sustained in the fight, but before passing, he transfers his duty to Mothra—the task of intercepting a massive meteorite on a collision course with Earth in the year 1999. Mothra departs into space, carrying Battra's unfulfilled responsibility as her own.
